3D Fins Review
I am always looking for new and cool surf gear that I can add to my arsenal and recently came across 3D Fins. They have some pretty crazy designs that I love, but what really caught my attention was the dimpled surface on the fin, just like a golf ball. I took a look at their site and they had some pretty strong claims that their fins reduce drag and increase lift. Thinking that these fins would make for a great review, I reached out to their team and they had a set in the mail for me before I knew it.
First Impressions:
My fins arrived quickly and looked great. I am always a little scared of ‘unofficial’ (not Futures or FCS branded) fins not fitting in their respective boxes, but these had no issue. The Futures base fit into the box like a glove. The box also came with some stickers, which is always a plus for me.
Performance:
I was stoked to find that all the claims I found on 3D Fins’ website were accurate. I felt essentially no drag from these fins, which was almost weird to get the feeling of at first. On my first wave with these fins, I was dropping in thinking I was going to slide out because I couldn't feel my fins catch. Trusting that they would work, I bottom turned and projected down the face with so much ease. Even though they felt so loose, they easily grabbed the wave and let me push off them generating tons of speed down the line.
I also found these fins to be great when attacking the lip. With the dimples increasing lift around the fins and tail, you can really jam your board in the pocket and turn it on a dime. I found that my turns were much easier to bring around and I didn’t have to power through them like I do with other fins.
Overall:
I am so stoked with these fins. I love the crazy loud designs almost as much as I love how well they perform. The price on these guys is also pretty killer. I hate going to a surf shop looking for a new set of fins and having to drop nearly $150 on some decent ones. A set of 3D Fins will only run you $71, and are fantastic for that price. These guys are a great addition to any board. Be sure to check out 3D fins on Instagram because they are always dropping new designs.
